Datas about Ageing and Dementia in India.



SOME RECENT FIGURES From "Ageing in Asia Pacific and the World" Report. 

"About 35 million people have dementia worldwide. That figure is likely to double every 20 years, to nearly 66 million in 2030 and 115 million in 2050, as the population ages, with much of the rise in poorer nations"

"The elderly constitute nearly 8.25% of India's population. In terms of numbers, according to the provisional data of Census 2011, this comes to an estimated 99.87 million. It is estimated that by 2050 almost 50 per cent of the Indian population will comprise of elderly people. According to the data, there are an estimated 7.93 lakh elderly women in Delhi. They make up 52.56% of the elderly population". 

" The group accounted for less than 5% of the population in 2001, but will make up 14% by 2050. In sheer numbers, projections from the latest 2011 Census pegged the 60-plus population at 100 million. "In 2026, they will account for over 174 million,"
said Dr Fauzdar Ram, director of the International Institute of Population Sciences."

"The International Institute for Population Sciences says that by 2050, the silverhaired group will account for over 14% of the population-up from 5% in 2001.The oldest old-the population aged 80 and over-will also increase from 1% to 3".

There are over 81 million elderly people in India. (census 2001)

It is expected that by 2025 this figure will be 177 million and by 2050, about 240 million, or more than one in five persons, will be senior citizens"

"By 2050, 20% of the world population will be above 65 years. The number of elderly patients are mainly in China, India and the United States". "By 2030, only three countries will have a ―young population: Brazil, India, and Indonesia". 


"The world was unprepared to deal with dementia, which would affect 65.7 million people by 2030, two-thirds of whom would be from low- and middle-income countries.
Report of 2009, globally 35.6 million people live with dementia and three million of them are in India."
